The Rights of the Child: Embedding Principles into Active Learning
During a recent visit to London, we had the pleasure of reconnecting with Giles from the London PE, Health & Wellbeing Hub. Our 'Walk & Talk' conversations spanned various topics, including physical education, wellbeing, and the broader implications of children's rights in education.
Spotlight on Rights Respecting Schools
At St Matthew’s CE Primary School in Trafford, we were warmly welcomed into a community deeply committed to children's rights. As a UNICEF Rights Respecting School, St Matthew’s integrates the 54 Articles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into its ethos. A standout feature is their uniquely named running track, 'Trail 24', inspired by Article 24:
"You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well."
This initiative exemplifies how schools can creatively promote health and wellbeing, aligning physical activity with children's rights. The fact that the name of the track was suggested by the children themselves is poignant. From student voice to student action.
Reflections from Primary Rocks
Our experiences in Manchester, particularly at the Primary Rocks Live event, further highlighted the region's dedication to children's rights. Walking into one workshop, we noticed this ominous sign on the door.
Graham Andre's session emphasised the importance of gender equality in education, resonating with our own observations in Yorkshire. Introducing tag rugby through Bradford Bulls showcased how inclusive sports can engage all students, regardless of gender, fostering both competition and collaboration.
We are always pleased when teachers comment on the fact that our approaches engage all children, both physically and mentally. Watching children compete and collaborate during the sessions, we often hear teachers say, "I didn't know she could do that!"

Organisations like @WomenEd and @ThisGirlCanUK continue to inspire, advocating for gender equality and encouraging girls to participate confidently in physical activities.
Moving Forwards: Aligning Values with Action
As educators and advocates, it's crucial to reflect on how our practices align with the rights of the child. Integrating these principles into daily learning not only promotes a supportive environment but also empowers students to understand and exercise their rights.
